Damaris Betancourt
Die Fotografin wurde 1970 in Havanna geboren. Trotz anfänglicher Vorbehalte begann sie 1988 ein Jurastudium an der Universität Havanna, das sie jedoch später abbrach, da ihre eigentliche Berufung der Journalismus war.
Dank ihrer Deutschkenntnisse arbeitete sie mit mehreren Schweizer Fotografen und Dokumentarfilmern zusammen, die nach Kuba reisten, um die Realität des Landes nach dem Fall der Berliner Mauer und des Kommunismusblocks zu dokumentieren. Diese Erfahrung eröffnete ihr eine neue Perspektive, erweiterte ihren Horizont über die Küsten ihrer Heimatinsel hinaus und führte sie in die Welt der Fotografie ein. Sie entdeckte das Potenzial des Standbildes, was sie dazu motivierte, es anstelle des geschriebenen Wortes als Ausdrucksmittel zu nutzen.
Im Jahr 1993, im Alter von 22 Jahren, kam sie nach Zürich, um am Projekt «Ricardo, Miriam und Fidel» mitzuwirken, einem Dokumentarfilm des Schweizer Filmemachers Christian Frei, der sich mit einem der verheerendsten Aspekte der kubanischen Krise der letzten sechs Jahrzehnte befasst: dem Auseinanderbrechen von Familien. Seitdem hat sie sich autodidaktisch weitergebildet und an weiteren Film- und Journalismusprojekten mitgewirkt. Seit mehr als drei Jahrzehnten werden ihre Fotografien in verschiedenen Schweizer und internationalen Medien veröffentlicht.
Seit 2025 ist sie Mitglied des Kollektivs Purple Eye (https://purple-eye.ch/).
Seit 2026 ist sie Mitglied des fotografischen Berufsverbands SIYU.
Sie lebt und arbeitet mit ihrer Familie in Zürich.

La fotógrafa nació en La Habana en 1970. A pesar de sus dudas iniciales, en 1988 comenzó a estudiar Derecho en la Universidad de La Habana, carrera que, sin embargo, abandonó más tarde, ya que su verdadera vocación era el periodismo.
Gracias a su dominio del alemán, colaboró con varios fotógrafos y documentalistas suizos que viajaron a Cuba para documentar la realidad del país tras la caída del Muro de Berlín y del bloque comunista. Esta experiencia le abrió una nueva perspectiva, amplió su horizonte más allá de las costas de su isla natal y la introdujo en el mundo de la fotografía. Descubrió el potencial de la imagen fija, lo que la motivó a utilizarla como medio de expresión en lugar de la palabra escrita.
En 1993, a los 22 años, llegó a Zúrich para participar en el proyecto «Ricardo, Miriam y Fidel», un documental del cineasta suizo Christian Frei que aborda uno de los aspectos más devastadores de la crisis cubana de las últimas seis décadas: la separación de las familias. Desde entonces, se ha formado de manera autodidacta y ha colaborado en otros proyectos cinematográficos y periodísticos. Desde hace más de tres décadas, sus fotografías se publican en diversos medios suizos e internacionales.

The photographer was born in Havana in 1970. Despite initial reservations, she began studying law at the University of Havana in 1988, but later dropped out to pursue her true calling in journalism.
Her knowledge of German enabled her to collaborate with several Swiss photographers and documentary filmmakers who traveled to Cuba to document the country’s reality after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the Eastern Bloc. This experience broadened her horizons beyond her home island and introduced her to photography. She discovered the potential of the still image and was motivated to use it as an alternative means of expression to the written word.
In 1993, aged 22, she moved to Zurich to work on the documentary project ‚Ricardo, Miriam and Fidel‘, directed by Swiss filmmaker Christian Frei. The film addresses one of the most devastating consequences of the Cuban crisis of the past six decades: the separation of families. Since then, she has continued her education as a self-taught artist and contributed to other film and journalism projects. Her photographs have been published in various Swiss and international media outlets for more than three decades.

Since 2026, he has been a member of SIYU, the professional photographers‘ association.
She lives and works in Zurich with her family.
