Damaris Betancourt
Fotógrafa nacida en La Habana en 1970. En 1988, a pesar de sus reservas iniciales, comenzó a cursar la Licenciatura en Derecho en la Universidad de La Habana, que posteriormente interrumpió, pues su genuina vocación era el periodismo, al cual, sin ser militante de la Juventud Comunista, no era posible acceder.
Gracias a sus conocimientos de alemán, colaboró con varios fotógrafos y documentalistas suizos que viajaron a Cuba para documentar la realidad del país tras la caída del Muro de Berlín y del bloque comunista. Esta experiencia le brindó una nueva perspectiva, expandiendo sus horizontes más allá de las costas de su isla natal y adentrándola en el universo de la fotografía. Descubrió el potencial de la imagen fija, lo que la motivó a adoptarla como herramienta de expresión en lugar de la palabra escrita.
En 1993, a la edad de 22 años, llegó a Zúrich para participar en el proyecto «Ricardo, Miriam y Fidel», un film documental dirigido por el cineasta suizo Christian Frei que aborda uno de los aspectos más devastadores de la crisis cubana de las últimas seis décadas: la ruptura familiar.
Desde entonces, ha adquirido conocimientos de forma autodidacta y ha colaborado en otros proyectos cinematográficos y periodísticos. Durante más de tres décadas, sus fotografías han sido publicadas en diversos medios de comunicación suizos e internacionales.

Die Fotografin wurde 1970 in Havanna geboren. Trotz anfänglicher Vorbehalte begann sie 1988 ein Jurastudium an der Universität Havanna, das sie jedoch später abbrach, da ihr eigentliche Berufung der Journalismus war – ein Studiengang, zu dem sie keinen Zugang hatte, da sie kein Mitglied der Kommunistischen Jugend war.
Dank ihrer Deutschkenntnisse arbeitete sie mit mehreren Schweizer Fotografen und Dokumentarfilmern zusammen, die nach Kuba reisten, um die Realität des Landes nach dem Fall der Berliner Mauer und des kommunistischen Blocks zu dokumentieren. Diese Erfahrung eröffnete ihr eine neue Perspektive, erweiterte ihren Horizont über die Küsten ihrer Heimatinsel hinaus und führte sie in die Welt der Fotografie ein. Sie entdeckte das Potenzial des Standbildes, was sie dazu motivierte, es anstelle des geschriebenen Wortes als Ausdrucksmittel zu nutzen.
Im Jahr 1993, im Alter von 22 Jahren, kam sie nach Zürich, um am Projekt «Ricardo, Miriam und Fidel» mitzuwirken, einem Dokumentarfilm des Schweizer Filmemachers Christian Frei, der sich mit einem der verheerendsten Aspekte der kubanischen Krise der letzten sechs Jahrzehnte befasst: dem Auseinanderbrechen von Familien.
Seitdem hat sie sich autodidaktisch weitergebildet und an weiteren Film- und Journalismusprojekten mitgewirkt. Seit mehr als drei Jahrzehnten werden ihre Fotografien in verschiedenen Schweizer und internationalen Medien veröffentlicht.

Sie lebt und arbeitet mit ihrer Familie in Zürich.

The photographer was born in Havana in 1970. Despite her initial doubts, she began studying law at the University of Havana in 1988 but later dropped out because her true calling was journalism—a field she could not enter without membership in the Communist Youth League.
Thanks to her knowledge of German, she collaborated with several Swiss photographers and documentary filmmakers who traveled to Cuba to document the country’s reality after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the communist bloc. This experience gave her a new perspective, expanding her horizons beyond the shores of her native island and introducing her to the world of photography. She discovered the potential of the still image, which motivated her to adopt it as a medium of expression rather than the written word.
In 1993, at the age of 22, she arrived in Zurich to participate in the project «Ricardo, Miriam, and Fidel», a documentary film directed by Swiss filmmaker Christian Frei that addresses one of the most devastating aspects of the Cuban crisis of the last six decades: family breakdown.
Since then, she has taught herself new skills and collaborated on other film and journalism projects. For more than three decades, her photographs have been published in various Swiss and international media outlets.
